Your Ultimate Guide to Washing Period Pants

Step By Step Guide: Washing Period Panties

Let’s face it.. period leaks happen. Maybe your flow caught you off guard, or things just got a little heavier than expected. We’ve all had that “uh oh” women.

In the past, that might’ve meant tossing your favourite knickers in the bin or panicking with stain remover at the kitchen sink. But if you're using period underwear, there’s no need for the drama or the landfill guilt.

At Daintie Delicates, we’ve created a detergent that actually understands what your underwear goes through. It’s specifically formulated to break down blood and other bodily fluids - all while being delicate enough for lace, mesh and everything in between.

Here’s how to wash your period underwear, the Daintie way.

1. Rinse

As soon as you can, rinse your underwear in cool water (ideally under 30°C / 86°F). This helps prevent the blood from setting into the fabric. You don’t need to soak—just rinse gently until the water runs clear. Many of our customers say rinsing in the shower is the easiest way to work it into your routine.

2. Pre-treat

Apply a small amount of our detergent directly to the gusset or stained area. Gently massage it in with your fingers and give it a little time to work. Our enzymes are designed to break down blood proteins without the need for scrubbing or harsh chemicals.

3. Machine or hand wash on cold

Once pre-treated, either pop your period pants in the machine on a cold, gentle cycle, or hand wash them in cool water. Cold is key here—hot temperatures can mess with the hi-tech absorbent layers and actually set the stains.

If you're machine washing, we recommend using a delicates bag to keep the fabric protected. No need to stress if you don’t have a full load straight away—you can let your rinsed underwear air out until you're ready to wash.

4. Skip the fabric softener

Please don’t let it near your period pants! Fabric softeners can coat the fibres and reduce absorbency. Stick with your gentle Daintie Delicates liquid—no perfumes, no softeners, no irritants. Just clean.

5. Air dry, always

Tumble dryers are quick but unforgiving. High heat can damage the lining and reduce how effective your period pants are. Hang them up on the line or a drying rack and let them breathe. Once dry, they’re good to go for next time.

Make Them Last: Care Tips for your Period Pants

Want your period pants to last for years? Here's how to show them love:

  • Wash before first wear to activate the absorbent layers.

  • Rotate your pairs. We suggest having at least 3–4 pairs so you’re never caught short.

  • Use a wash bag to protect against zips, hooks, or rougher fabrics in the machine.

  • Avoid harsh detergents or bleaches — these break down delicate fibres.

  • Don’t soak for long periods. Rinse and wash works best for blood.

  • Store completely dry. Avoid packing them away damp.
